For years, local hook and line fishermen have taken pride in the fact that they return their unwanted cod back to the ocean alive. Now local fishermen are conducting experiments in the upcoming year to determine exactly how many young codfish survive being hooked and then released, and how many die. CCCHFA fishermen, the National Marine Fisheries Service and New England Aquarium catch fish from different depths and at different temperatures and then put them in cages on the seafloor to monitor their survival. Early results show almost 90% live to tell the tale of being hooked by a Cape Cod fisherman!
