Long ago, Chatham's shores were lined with boat yards, salt works and docks and shanties for storing and repairing gear. Today, commercial fishing still remains a vital part of the town, with Chatham leading all other Cape towns in annual fish landings.
Residents and tourists alike now have the opportunity to follow the history of commercial fishing in Chatham through the centuries on the Chatham Commercial Fisheries Trail with a special map published by the Cape Cod Commercial Hook Fishermen's Association.
Starting at the Old Mill Boat Yard at Stage Harbor and ending at the Powder Hole and Whitewash Village in Monomoy, the map identifies 19 commercial fishing-related sites in Chatham and Monomoy and explains each site's history. Written by Chatham residents Ann Vick-Westgate and Shannon Eldredge, the trail is divided into sections that can be driven, walked, biked, or reached by water.
