Herring Campaign

YahooNews Assignment Earth Video- a short video entitled Declining Herring, and it provides a basic background of the issue and has some great aerial footage of midwater trawl vessels at work.

We need your help! Send in a letter to the Regional Administrator and the Director of the Council asking for herring regulations that will protect the herring, not the industrialized corporations.

As always, the most up to date information on regulations, campaign progress, and images are at:

UPDATES

05.01.07

The New England Fisheries Management Council has voted to close a portion of the inshore Gulf of Maine to the midwater fleet, from June to September. Only fixed gear or purse seines will be allowed in the area year round. Less midwater trawl fishing means more herring to feed striped bass, tuna, whales, seals, dolphins, and groundfish.

Did we mention that the herring issue made Yahoo News? Their journalist interviewed some of our fishermen and staff, and filmed video of the midwater trawl fleet out on the water. Check out the story and video: Declining Herring, published on 11/28/06.

09.29.06

At the September New England Fishery Management Council Meeting in Peabody, we had two victories for herring!

1) The Council voted to reduce the Gulf of Maine Inshore TAC (total allowable catch) by 10,000 metric tons (mt). So now the midwater fleet can only catch 50,000 mt instead of 60,000 mt. A good start to protecting the herring!

2) The Council appointed our Policy Analyst, John Pappalardo, as the new Chair of the Council. He will be setting the agenda of the Council for the next year.

And a big thank you to our supporters from the 2006 Hookers Ball Fund a Need.
