Hurricane Katrina Fishermen's Relief Fund

Fishermen along the Gulf Coast have not only lost their homes, but also their livelihood. Hurricane Katrina, the category 5 hurricane that struck the Gulf Coast, destroyed many fishing vessels and shore side support.

CCCHFA & NAMA have joined together to collect funds that will go directly to the fishermen of the Gulf Coast.

PRESS RELEASE

New England Fishermen Pledge to Help Their Counterparts Affected by Hurricane

Saco, Maine—In a show of solidarity with the coastal communities affected by hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico, two New England commercial fishing organizations announced in a joint press release the creation of the “Hurricane Katrina Fishermen’s Relief Fund.”

Staff at the Northwest Atlantic Marine Alliance (NAMA), based in Saco, Maine, and the Cape Cod Commercial Hook Fishermen’s Association (CCCHFA), based in Chatham, Mass., have been in communication with officials from the affected region regarding the specific impact the storm has had on the fishing industry and fishing communities. Additionally, fishing organizations from as far away as Alaska have pledged support for the effort.

“Obviously, it’s too early to assess the extent of damage to fishermen and fishing infrastructure, but early reports indicate that scores of boats and shoreside businesses have been destroyed,” said Michael Crocker, Communications Director for NAMA. “Anticipating that financial assistance for long-term rebuilding of the commercial fishing sector will be badly needed, we have begun to assemble relevant organizations to lend support.”

NAMA and the CCCHFA recently cooperated to assist fishing communities in Sri Lanka impacted by the Indian Ocean tsunami last year. That effort raised over $140,000, which was distributed to over 500 victims in the form of small grants. For more information call 207-284-5374 and 508-945-2432.
