Regional Fishery Management Councils

Regional fishery management councils can be viewed as trustees for the public resources of the sea, which are the common property of all citizens.   The councils attempt to make decisions for the public good while balancing competing interests.

 

Councils are made up of Council members: voting and non-voting, government and citizen; each Council also has a staff that includes an executive director, secretaries, biologists, economists, and others.

 

Further guidance is provided by a Science and Statistical Committee (SSC) and multiple advisory panels.

 

The New England Fishery Management Council oversees the federal waters (3-200 miles offshore) adjacent to Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.
