Spiny Dogfish Genetics
With funding provided by the Massachusetts Environmental Trust we partnered with Marine Biological Laboratory in 2003 to determine genetic relationships between spiny dogfish from NC, MA, Nova Scotia, and the Pacific Northwest. Coordination with fishermen from the various regions yielded tissue samples that showed the MA and NC dogfish are more closely related than the MA and Nova Scotia dogfish, despite their geographical differences. This initial work on stock distribution was presented at the first annual Dogfish Symposium in June 2005.
