The Shanty
Community Fisheries Action Center
Limited communication among stakeholders has fueled a distrust which stands in
the way of more proactive and progressive fisheries management. Fishermen are
fiercely independent by nature and find the management process intimidating,
hard to access and thick with bureaucracy. Dedicated, well-intentioned members
of the public find the management system equally impenetrable. By offering a
place for fishermen and concerned coastal residents to learn the details of the
management process and how to change it, the gaps between management and
industry will diminish.
In 2000, the CCCHFA constructed the S.S. Shanty Community Fisheries Action
Center to 1) actively provide educational opportunities for students, fishermen, and the general public to learn about essential ocean issues, including fisheries, 2) empower the fishermen to create proactive, conservation-oriented initiatives that protect the fish and the fishermen, and 3) facilitate collaboration between fishermen, conservationists, scientists, politicians, managers, and the community to create bridges of understanding. We have expanded programming at the Shanty and offer a
marine educational center
for children and adults to gain hands-on knowledge about the marine environment.
The S.S. Shanty is the venue in Chatham where everyone is welcome and encouraged
to learn more about the fisheries issues that shape the community. The Shanty
gives people the chance to participate in the fisheries management process.
We offer the following resources at the Shanty:
- A large selection of books, journals, magazines and newsletters relating to
fisheries and marine interests is available.
- A Bulletin Board for business postings, services and other information to share
within the fishing community is posted.
- Most fishery management plans for the region are available for review and
duplication.
- Stakeholder meetings to form policy around the
New England groundfish regulations
- Workshops in VMS, internet training, computer skills, writing and public
speaking are available
