The CCCHFA acknowledges that lawsuits should only be utilized as a last resort. After nearly a decade of attempting to convince the New England Fishery Management Council that sensitive rocky bottom on George’s Bank needed to be protected, CCCHFA was unsatisfied with the Council’s response. In 1994 a lawsuit was filed against the federal government to protect undersea habitat. Litigation continues to present day.
The CCCHFA holds a seat on the Board of Directors for the Marine Fish Conservation Network, a national coalition of environmental groups and fishing organizations. Within the coalition, CCCHFA provides a unique fishermen’s prospective from the New England Region. As new legislation is proposed in regards to sustainable fisheries, CCCHFA relies on its foundation as a grass-roots organization to propel New England Sustainable Fisheries Act issues to the forefront of the political agenda. To learn more about CCCHFA participation, visit the Marine Fish Conservation Network’s website.
In 2002 CCCHFA policy analyst John Pappalardo was appointed to his first term on the New England Fishery Management Council. John provided a much needed voice for the fish and small boat fishermen of Cape Cod. We are thrilled that John was recently reappointed to the Council for an additional term. The CCCHFA staff and Board members regularly attend Council meetings, as well as serve on various advisory panels for habitat, dogfish, enforcement, and groundfish. As such, CCCHFA provides a consistent message for fisheries reform through bycatch reduction, habitat protection and preservation of small scale fishing communities.
Similar to our undertakings on the Regional Council, CCCHFA plays an active role on the state level. Staff and board members frequent commission meetings and serve on advisory panels for striped bass, spiny dogfish and summer flounder.
Communication is a critical element in raising public consciousness regarding fisheries policy issues and influencing political change. The CCCHFA has a coordinated media and outreach plan to support the goals of the Fisheries Reform Campaign. We aim to generate public awareness, activate local constituencies, and ultimately shape policy implementation.
